Residents of Aleto community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State are assessing damage after a gas pipeline explosion destroyed 50 houses and vehicles. The incident injured more than 20 people, according to local reports. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, but the extent of the damage remains unclear.
The explosion occurred in the early hours of the morning, causing a fire that spread rapidly through the area. Local authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the blast, though preliminary investigations suggest a ruptured gas pipeline may be responsible. Community leaders have called for urgent government intervention to address the crisis and provide support to affected families.
This is not the first such incident in the region. Similar explosions have occurred in the past due to aging infrastructure and inadequate maintenance of gas pipelines. The government has faced criticism for slow response times and lack of investment in safer energy systems. Community members are now demanding immediate action to prevent future disasters and ensure safer living conditions.
