Former Vice-President of Sierra Leone, Mr Samuel Sam-Sumana, has publicly acknowledged Nigeria’s significant role in restoring peace to the country, stating that these sacrifices will never be forgotten. Speaking in Abuja, Sam-Sumana highlighted Nigeria’s historical contributions to regional stability, particularly during the country’s civil war era. His remarks were part of a broader call for Africa’s economic independence, emphasizing the need for regional cooperation and self-reliance.

The Nigerian government has long been involved in peacekeeping missions in neighboring countries, including Sierra Leone, where it played a key role in ending the country’s 11-year civil conflict. Sam-Sumana’s comments reflect a growing recognition of Nigeria’s diplomatic and military influence in West Africa. His speech also touched on the importance of African nations working together to address economic challenges, rather than relying on external powers.

Nigeria’s involvement in regional peace efforts dates back to the 1990s, when it deployed troops as part of the United Nations mission in Sierra Leone. The country has since continued to support peace initiatives in the region, often through diplomatic channels and military assistance. Sam-Sumana’s remarks underscore the need for sustained investment in African-led solutions to conflicts and economic development. The former VP’s visit to Abuja coincided with discussions on regional security and economic integration, highlighting the ongoing relevance of Nigeria’s role in African affairs.
