Security forces in Nigeria have arrested five suspects linked to the abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Imo State. The suspects were apprehended during intelligence-led operations across Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Abia State between October 10 and 14. Three other suspects fled with gunshot injuries.
The Department of State Services (DSS), military, and police conducted the arrests. Officials confirmed the operation took place on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day. A security source described the arrests as a major relief, emphasizing the agencies’ efforts in tracking the suspects.
This incident follows a series of abductions targeting NYSC members, a government program that places young graduates in service roles. The abduction of 20 participants has raised concerns about the safety of participants during their deployment. The arrested suspects are alleged to be part of a criminal gang responsible for the crime.
The case highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring the security of NYSC members, particularly in regions with reported criminal activity. The government has previously launched initiatives to protect participants, but incidents like this continue to draw attention to the issue. The arrested suspects face further legal proceedings.
