The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has issued a court order halting the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from pursuing a criminal case against the founder of Chappal Energies, Wale Igbintade. The court ruled that the EFCC should have appealed a subsisting court order before proceeding with the prosecution.
The order was issued after the EFCC attempted to initiate legal action against Wale Igbintade, who is also the managing director of Chappal Energies Ltd. The court emphasized that the commission had not followed the proper legal procedures, which included appealing the existing order before filing the case.
This legal challenge comes amid a broader dispute over shareholding and corporate governance within the company. The EFCC had previously filed charges against Igbintade, alleging financial crimes. However, the court’s intervention has temporarily blocked the prosecution, pending further legal proceedings.
The case highlights ongoing tensions between regulatory bodies and private sector leaders in Nigeria. It also underscores the importance of procedural compliance in legal matters. The EFCC has not yet commented on the court’s decision, and the case remains under review.
