President Bola Tinubu left Abuja on Thursday for Makkah, Saudi Arabia, to perform the Umrah pilgrimage. His Airbus A330-200 took off at 2:20pm local time. The journey marks his first official trip to the holy city. The President’s visit is intended for spiritual reflection and prayers for Nigeria’s peace, unity, and stability.

The pilgrimage, known as the lesser hajj, involves a journey to the Holy City. Tinubu’s spokesman, Mr Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the trip would provide the President an opportunity for devotion and spiritual renewal. The visit is expected to last several days. No official itinerary has been released.

This trip follows recent political tensions in Nigeria. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has questioned the President’s absence, challenging him to provide daily proof of his presence in Makkah. Atiku alleges the pilgrimage could be a cover for a trip to France. Tinubu has not responded publicly to the challenge.

The Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs has also announced efforts to improve the Umrah experience for pilgrims. Digital screens in Makkah provide religious guidance and practical information in multiple languages. These measures aim to enhance the spiritual and logistical aspects of the pilgrimage.

Tinubu’s visit comes amid ongoing discussions about national stability and governance. His spiritual journey is seen as a symbolic gesture for national unity. The pilgrimage is a deeply personal and religious act, reflecting the President’s commitment to his faith and his role as a leader.
