Google has awarded Nigerian health technology startup Helium Health a $2.5 million grant to deploy artificial intelligence tools aimed at improving maternal healthcare. The project targets 1.9 million pregnant women in four Nigerian states. The grant is part of’s global initiative to support innovative solutions in healthcare.
Helium Health will use AI to enhance prenatal and postnatal care by analyzing medical data and providing real-time insights to healthcare providers. The initiative is designed to reduce maternal mortality rates in Nigeria, where access to quality healthcare remains a challenge. The project is one of 15 global recipients selected for a $30 million fund.
The initiative builds on previous efforts by Google to leverage technology for public health improvements. Helium Health has been working with Nigerian health authorities to integrate AI into existing healthcare systems. The project is expected to launch in early 2027, with initial focus on maternal health outcomes.
Nigeria has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, with over 1,000 women dying annually from preventable causes. The government has been working with international partners to improve healthcare infrastructure and access. This project represents a significant step toward using technology to address systemic challenges in maternal care.
The collaboration between Google and Helium Health highlights the growing role of private sector innovation in tackling public health issues. The project is part of a broader trend of tech-driven solutions to improve healthcare outcomes in low-resource settings.
