BUA Cement and Nigerian Breweries have joined eight other firms in securing permits to generate their own electricity, marking a significant shift as Nigeria's electricity crisis continues to impact production costs. The move comes amid persistent power shortages that have forced businesses to seek alternative energy solutions.
The companies, which include major industrial players, are now operating their own power generation units, reducing reliance on the national grid. This trend reflects growing frustration with the unreliable electricity supply, which has led to increased operational expenses and production delays.
The decision to generate electricity internally is part of a broader pattern as businesses in Nigeria increasingly turn to self-sufficiency. The government has struggled to expand the national grid, leaving many industries to invest in private power generation. This shift highlights the urgent need for improved infrastructure and policy reforms to stabilize the energy sector.
