Idris Elba’s Akuna Group, in partnership with Google, has launched a free AI filmmaking program targeting creators in five African countries. The initiative, announced in November 2026, provides access to AI-powered tools and training to help local filmmakers enhance their craft. The program is open to emerging and independent creators, offering them the opportunity to develop short films using advanced AI technology.

The five participating countries are Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, and Morocco. Each country will receive tailored support to ensure the program meets local needs. The initiative includes online workshops, mentorship from industry professionals, and access to AI software designed for film production. Participants will also gain exposure through a dedicated platform where their work can be showcased.

This collaboration follows a growing trend of tech companies and entertainment leaders investing in African creative industries. Akuna Group, founded by Idris Elba, has previously supported film and media projects across the continent. The program is part of a broader effort to promote digital innovation and cultural expression in Africa. The initiative is expected to run for 12 months, with the first cohort of participants set to begin training in early 2027.
