Flutterwave, a Nigerian fintech company, is expanding its operations into the banking sector after a decade of focusing on digital payments. The company, which has processed over 10 billion transactions since its launch in 2016, announced plans to enter the banking industry as part of its long-term growth strategy. This move comes as the company seeks to leverage its existing infrastructure and customer base to offer a broader range of financial services.
Flutterwave’s expansion into banking will involve the development of a digital bank, which will provide services such as savings accounts, loans, and credit products. The company plans to launch the bank in early 2025, with an initial focus on Nigeria and later expansion into other African markets. The decision follows a period of rapid growth in the fintech sector across the continent, driven by increasing mobile phone penetration and a growing demand for digital financial services.
The shift into banking marks a significant step for Flutterwave, which has already established itself as a leader in the payments space. The company has raised over $1 billion in funding from international investors, including SoftBank and Mastercard. With this new venture, Flutterwave aims to become a full-service financial technology provider, offering both payment solutions and traditional banking services. The move also aligns with broader trends in the African fintech industry, where companies are increasingly diversifying their offerings to meet the evolving needs of consumers.
