Bola Tinubu, president of Nigeria, has seen increased grassroots support in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to a former speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly. Mr Ikuinyi-Awaji Ibani, who also coordinates the APC campaign in Andoni Local Government Area, affirmed this during a campaign rally in Port Harcourt. His remarks come as Tinubu faces criticism from opposition parties over economic management and public resource allocation.
The political landscape in Nigeria remains tense, with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties like the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) engaging in public disputes. The NDC has accused Tinubu’s administration of mismanaging the country’s wealth and excessive borrowing, calling for a reversal of what it describes as the erosion of Nigeria’s commonwealth. The party supports Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as presidential and vice-presidential candidates, respectively.
Tinubu’s administration has also been under scrutiny for its handling of the electricity crisis, with Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw criticizing the government’s failure to provide reliable power. Meanwhile, Tinubu has defended his policies, including his stance on peace and maturity during recent political tensions in Rivers State, where he praised Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his leadership.
The 2027 elections are shaping up as a critical moment for Nigerian politics, with Tinubu’s growing support in key states like Rivers contrasting with the opposition’s calls for reform. The political dynamics will likely influence the country’s future direction in the coming years.
