The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Director General, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, has pledged to enhance institutional accountability in the management of public healthcare resources. Speaking in Abuja, Dr. Ohiri emphasized that integrity is essential for improving healthcare services.
He warned that current challenges in the sector stem from a lack of accountability and transparency. Dr. Ohiri outlined plans to implement stricter oversight mechanisms to ensure public funds are used effectively. The NHIA has also announced a review of existing protocols to align with international standards of healthcare governance.
This comes amid growing public concern over the efficiency and accessibility of healthcare services in Nigeria. Recent reports have highlighted delays in treatment and mismanagement of funds. Dr. Ohiri’s remarks follow a series of internal audits that revealed discrepancies in resource allocation. The NHIA has committed to publishing regular reports on its progress to build public trust.
The push for greater accountability follows years of criticism from both civil society and medical professionals. While the NHIA has made strides in expanding health insurance coverage, systemic issues remain. Dr. Ohiri acknowledged these challenges and stressed the need for collaboration between government agencies and healthcare providers.
The reforms are expected to take effect within the next six months, with pilot programs starting in selected states. The NHIA has also announced plans to engage with international organizations for technical support. The move marks a significant step toward improving healthcare governance in Nigeria.
