The Nigerian government confirmed the evacuation of its first imported Ebola case to Switzerland following significant clinical improvement. The patient, identified as the index case for Nigeria’s first Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak, was cleared for transfer by health officials. Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, announced the decision on Monday.

Pate stated the evacuation was approved after the patient showed stable condition and no further transmission risk. The patient was transported to a specialized facility in Switzerland for continued care. This marks the first time Nigeria has evacuated an Ebola case abroad.

Nigeria reported its first confirmed EVD case in September 2024, linked to travel from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Health authorities implemented strict containment measures, including isolation and contact tracing. The patient’s recovery and subsequent evacuation highlight Nigeria’s response to the outbreak.

The Bundibugyo strain, less severe than the Zaire variant, has been reported in several African countries. Nigeria’s health ministry has emphasized transparency and collaboration with international agencies. The evacuation underscores the country’s commitment to managing the outbreak while ensuring patient safety.
