The North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has urged the federal government to revive stalled oil exploration in Borno, emphasizing its potential to boost regional economic development. The call comes amid ongoing efforts to restart the Kolmani oil project, which had been paused due to logistical and financial challenges.

The governors also announced plans to establish a regional airline, North-East Air, as part of a broader economic development strategy. This initiative is expected to enhance connectivity and stimulate trade across the region. During a meeting in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno, the forum released an 11-point communique outlining key priorities, including infrastructure development and energy sector revitalization.

The push for oil exploration revival follows years of underinvestment in the sector, which has contributed to economic stagnation in the region. The NEGF argues that restarting oil projects could generate significant revenue, create jobs, and attract foreign investment. The proposed regional airline is seen as a complementary measure to improve transportation and support economic growth.

Borno, a state in northeastern Nigeria, has long faced economic and infrastructural challenges. The region’s oil reserves have remained largely untapped due to security concerns and lack of funding. The NEGF’s dual focus on energy and transportation reflects a strategic effort to address these issues through coordinated regional action.

The governors’ call for federal support highlights the need for policy alignment and financial commitment to unlock the region’s economic potential. With the Kolmani project resuming and the airline initiative gaining momentum, the NEGF aims to position Borno as a key player in national economic development.
