Nigerians have filed a legal challenge against Mojisola Adeyeye, the director general of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC), over her handling of counterfeit drugs. The legal action comes after months of public outcry over the prevalence of fake medicines in the country.
The protesters argue that NAFDAC has not done enough to curb the illegal production and distribution of counterfeit drugs, which have caused numerous deaths and illnesses. A recent report by the Nigerian Medical Association highlighted that over 500 cases of poisoning were linked to fake drugs in 2023 alone.
NAFDAC has faced repeated criticism for its slow response to drug-related complaints and its lack of transparency in investigations. The agency has been accused of failing to enforce regulations and protect consumers. The legal challenge is expected to be heard in the Federal High Court in Lagos.
The issue of counterfeit drugs has been a growing concern in Nigeria for years. Despite government efforts to strengthen drug regulation, the problem persists due to weak enforcement and corruption. The current legal action is seen as a significant step towards holding officials accountable for public health failures.
