INEC has announced that the national voter register in Nigeria now stands at 103 million, marking a significant update ahead of the 2027 general elections. The figure was disclosed by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a keynote address at a strategic workshop for editors in Abuja. The update comes as the commission continues to refine and expand its voter database to ensure accurate and inclusive electoral processes.

Amupitan also highlighted that Lagos, Kano, and Kaduna states have the highest numbers of registered voters, indicating a growing electorate in key regions. The commission has begun distributing non-sensitive materials to states to support the registration process. Additionally, INEC has set up a joint team with anti-graft and financial intelligence agencies to monitor illegal campaign spending and vote-buying. This initiative aims to uphold transparency and fairness in the upcoming elections.

The 2027 elections will mark the first major electoral cycle under INEC’s new voter registration system, which has been in place since 2026. The commission has been working closely with media outlets and stakeholders to ensure public awareness and participation. Despite challenges in reaching remote areas, INEC has reported steady progress in expanding voter access and improving data accuracy. The final voter registration deadline is approaching, with a 100-day countdown to the elections.
