The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that 9,324,349 young Nigerians were newly registered during the 2026 Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. The registration took place across the country and was part of efforts to ensure a robust electorate for the 2027 general elections.

INEC stated that the registration process was conducted continuously to maintain up-to-date voter records. The commission emphasized that the inclusion of young voters reflects a growing trend of youth engagement in the political process. The data shows a significant increase in participation compared to previous registration cycles.

This is the third major voter registration drive under INEC’s continuous system, which aims to keep the electoral rolls current. The 2026 exercise followed similar campaigns in 2023 and 2025, each of which saw a rise in the number of registered voters. The commission noted that the youth population is a key demographic for future elections and that their inclusion is crucial for democratic representation.

The 2027 general elections are expected to be the first in which a larger proportion of the population will be eligible to vote. The registration of nearly 9.3 million young people is seen as a positive step toward ensuring fair and inclusive elections.
