The National Population Commission (NPC) in Nigeria has launched efforts to create a unified system for marriage and divorce registration, beginning with a zonal consultation in Adamawa state. The event, held in Yola, marks the first step in a broader initiative to standardize legal procedures across the country.
The consultation brought together officials and stakeholders from the North-East region to discuss the implementation of a centralized registration process. The NPC aims to reduce discrepancies in marital records and improve data accuracy for demographic planning. Officials emphasized the need for a national approach to ensure consistency and legal validity of marital status across all states.
This initiative follows years of calls for reform in Nigeria's civil registration system. Previous efforts have been hampered by inconsistent state-level practices and limited coordination between federal and local authorities. The NPC’s new strategy seeks to address these challenges by establishing a unified framework that can be adopted nationwide. The success of the Adamawa consultation will determine the next steps in rolling out the system across other regions.
