Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima have announced the disbursement of N125 billion to over 1.29 million students under the National Education Loan Fund (NELFund). The initiative, part of the government’s broader economic recovery strategy, aims to alleviate financial burdens on students and families. The funding was officially released during a meeting between the Vice President and diaspora Nigerians in New York, where Shettima sought support for Tinubu’s administration and its Renewed Hope Agenda.
The NELFund is designed to provide educational loans and grants to students across the country, with a focus on improving access to higher education and vocational training. The initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to addressing youth unemployment and enhancing human capital. While the program has been praised for its scale, critics argue that more transparency is needed regarding the selection process and long-term sustainability.
Shettima’s outreach to the diaspora highlights the administration’s efforts to secure financial and political backing for its policies. The meeting in New York underscores the growing role of Nigerian expatriates in shaping domestic policy. As the government continues to implement its economic reforms, the success of the NELFund will be closely watched by both domestic and international observers.
