Dangote Petroleum Refinery has become the primary source of petrol in Nigeria, supplying 71 percent of the fuel received in August. This marks a significant shift from previous months, during which a larger share of the country’s fuel demand was met through imports. The data, released by the Nigerian National Petroleum Authority, highlights the growing role of locally produced fuel in the country’s energy mix.
The increase in domestic supply is attributed to the expansion and efficiency improvements at the Dangote refinery, which has been operational for several years. With the refinery now meeting the majority of the nation’s petrol needs, the government has seen a notable decrease in the volume of imported fuel. This trend is expected to continue as the refinery continues to scale up production.
The reduction in fuel imports has had a positive impact on Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves, as fewer dollars are spent on importing oil products. Analysts suggest that the continued growth of the refinery could further reduce the country’s dependence on foreign oil, enhancing energy security and economic stability.
