Former military president Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has called on Nigerians to prioritize national unity and peaceful coexistence ahead of the 2027 elections. Speaking at a public event in Minna, Babangida urged politicians to conduct campaigns without violence, emphasizing the importance of collective interests over personal gains. His remarks come amid growing concerns about political tensions in the country.
Babangida, who led Nigeria from 1985 to 1990, addressed a gathering of political leaders and citizens. He stressed that peaceful elections are essential for the stability of the nation. His call follows recent reports of heightened political activity and sporadic clashes in several states.
This is not the first time Babangida has spoken on the need for unity. In a separate address earlier this week, he reiterated his commitment to national reconciliation, urging all citizens to work together for the country’s progress. His message aligns with broader efforts by Nigerian leaders to de-escalate political tensions ahead of the upcoming elections.
