Former head of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CIBN) policy committee, Dr. Adebayo Oni, has emphasized the need for stronger public understanding and trust in order to successfully implement critical economic reforms, including the recapitalization of Nigeria’s banking sector. Speaking at a recent policy forum, Oni highlighted that without public buy-in, reforms risk failing to address deep-rooted societal challenges.
Oni pointed to the ongoing efforts to strengthen the financial sector as a key example, noting that these measures are essential for long-term economic stability. However, he warned that without transparent communication and active participation from citizens, the reforms may not achieve their intended impact. The discussion came as Nigeria continues to navigate economic pressures, including inflation and currency fluctuations.
The call for public engagement aligns with broader discussions on how to improve governance and economic performance. Oni urged policymakers to prioritize dialogue with the public, arguing that trust is a crucial foundation for sustainable development. His remarks underscore the growing recognition of the role of civic involvement in shaping national economic strategies.
