President Bola Tinubu has directed state governments to implement lower transport costs by October 1, as part of a broader effort to ease fuel subsidy pressures. The directive comes after the federal government announced the conversion of 120,000 vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG) across 400 centers nationwide. Tinubu emphasized that this shift aims to reduce dependency on subsidized fuel while making transportation more affordable for citizens.
Several states, including Abuja, have already taken steps to lower fares, aligning with the federal government’s push for cost reductions. Tinubu urged more states to accelerate the rollout of CNG infrastructure, highlighting the need for coordinated action to stabilize the transport sector. The policy reflects ongoing efforts to address economic challenges while promoting sustainable energy alternatives.
The move follows recent discussions on fuel subsidy reforms, with Tinubu stressing the importance of state cooperation in implementing the new measures. As the deadline approaches, officials are expected to monitor the impact of these changes on both public transport and the broader economy.
