A housing industry expert, Odunayo Ojo, has warned that Nigeria’s housing deficit and rent crisis have reached a critical point, with structural challenges hindering progress. Ojo outlined key obstacles such as inadequate land policies, limited financing options, and poor infrastructure, which collectively limit housing development. The expert emphasized that these issues are exacerbating the affordability crisis, particularly for low-income families.
Ojo proposed practical solutions including streamlined regulatory processes, increased public-private partnerships, and targeted subsidies for affordable housing. These measures, he argued, could help bridge the gap between demand and supply. The housing shortage has led to rising rents and increased homelessness, with many residents forced to live in informal settlements.
The expert called for immediate government intervention to address the root causes of the crisis. Without urgent action, Ojo warned, the situation could worsen, further straining the already fragile economy. The housing sector remains a key area of concern for policymakers and investors alike.
