Over the past five years, Nigeria has recorded 63 fatalities and economic losses of N34.8 billion due to military air crashes. The incidents, which occurred between 2021 and 2026, involved multiple military aircraft operated by the Nigerian Air Force. The most severe incident took place in 2023 when a military plane crashed near Kaduna, killing 22 personnel.
The financial impact of these crashes has been significant, with the government estimating the total cost of repairs, investigations, and operational disruptions at N34.8 billion. The crashes have raised concerns about the maintenance and safety protocols of the military aviation sector.
Nigeria's military has faced scrutiny over its aviation safety record in recent years. The Nigerian Air Force has acknowledged the need for improved safety measures and has initiated a review of its aircraft maintenance procedures. However, the frequency of such incidents highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring the reliability of military aviation assets. The government has not yet announced specific measures to address the issue, but officials have expressed commitment to enhancing safety standards.
