The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has begun due diligence on the release of N300 billion from an escrow account held by insurers, following the completion of a recent recapitalization process. Insurers are awaiting the finalization of this process, which is expected to provide much-needed liquidity to the sector.

The CBN’s due diligence process involves verifying the financial health and compliance of insurance companies before releasing the funds. This step is part of broader efforts to ensure the stability of the financial sector. The N300 billion was initially held in escrow as part of a recapitalization initiative aimed at strengthening the insurance industry.

In parallel, the CBN has also announced plans to attract Chinese investment into Nigeria’s financial markets. Governor Olayemi Cardoso highlighted this strategy during the closing press briefing of the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund. The goal is to enhance investment flows, improve access to long-term financing, and strengthen cross-border payments and trade.

This dual approach reflects the CBN’s focus on both domestic financial stability and international economic integration. The release of the N300 billion is seen as a critical step in restoring confidence in the insurance sector, while the push for Chinese capital aims to diversify Nigeria’s financial partnerships and support long-term economic growth.
